Industry At A Glance: Beef Exports Set Record

Exports through May established a new record in 2012: $2.155 billion (beating 2011’s prior best by approximately $100 million). Beef exports continue to provide an important source of revenue for the industry and prove supportive for the fed market – adding nearly $19/cwt. or $235/head through May. U.S. cattlemen enjoyed one of the best years ever in terms of beef exports in 2011, ending the year with exports up 27% over 2010. But maintaining and increasing U.S. beef exports in the years to come will become more challenging. What are your thoughts on this chart and the effect of beef exports on producer fortunes? This is good news, BUT how much beef do we "IMPORT" and at what cost to the American cattleman? We import too much, just look at our prices!

Good stats, they would be even better if you showed the poundage associated with those numbers....$ Value is pretty non-consistant right now...poundage is what the local prpoducer talks about first and then the $ associated with that pound..thank you.

It is sad that demand due in part to export is up yet global corporation-owned cattle processors control price to essential act as a buffer or filter between actual demand and what should be a fair price to the cattle producer. What can we as cattle producers do? I'd like to hear from anyone interested in developing a social media as a means of communicating to as many US cattle producers as possible. If developed and implemented, this could be a way for producers across the US to put a "hold" on selling fat cattle for even a few days such that demand really hits and more fair prices can hopefully be gained by all cattle producers.

WOW, what a wonderful idea. Not being one to use the social media as many do, I would not know how to go about that. However I think I understand what you are talking about. If people in a third world country can use it to orchestrate civil disobedience, we could use it to get better control over the market place. I wonder though if that could be considered being in violation commerce laws to do with monopolies. It would be interesting to get a legal opinion. Certainly we have some lawyers out there who raise cattle as well as just sling the…well you know what I mean…

¿A qué precios de entrada de terneros de 200 kg. estaría la variable positiva , teniendo en cuenta el coste de alimentación actual para poder ser competitivos en la exportación?
