BVD

BVD: Bovine Viral Diarrhea

Bovine Virual Diarrhea (BVD) virus is perhaps the single most important infectious disease agent in the beef industry. Horizontal infection from one animal to a pregnant female can lead to vertical transmission of the BVD virus to her fetus during pregnancy. Fetal infection can lead to embryonic death, birth defects and stunting. Or, an infected newborn calf, though appearing normal, can be persistently infected with the virus throughout its life, shedding high amounts of the virus to its herdmates.
