HSUS Appears To Have A Powerful Friend Within the IRS

RSS

Lois Lerner, who is director of the IRS Exempt Organizations Division, is a member of the Humane Society of the U.S. Could this be why there hasn’t been an official investigation of HSUS?

When it comes to business, sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) appears to have a powerful friend within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It's Lois Lerner, who serves as director of the in the IRS Exempt Organizations Division, and is also a proud member and supporter of HSUS.

Lerner has been a popular name in the headlines lately, after a press conference where she confessed, “I’m not good at math.” Wait, an IRS employee is bad at math? Does that make sense?

The press conference was held to address the IRS admission that it inappropriately targeted conservative groups seeking non-profit status from the agency. Lerner was unable to answer questions about political bias behind the targeting of these groups, but the IRS is admitting that such abuse has been occurring.

It’s quite evident that if you are disliked by the IRS, you will most certainly be overly scrutinized, taxed and audited, but if you are a bedfellow with this government agency, you might just be exempt from paying in at all.

That’s exactly what might be happening with HSUS, given the organization’s cozy relationship with Lerner and the IRS. Even though several members of Congress have written letters to the IRS requesting that IRS investigate the questionable tax-exempt status of HSUS, there has been no action. It makes you wonder if it’s time to look closer at Lerner and her HSUS ties.

Note that HSUS spends less than 1% of its $150-million annual budget actually supporting animal shelters, despite raising millions from consumers via heart-wrenching commercials about homeless and abused pets. Meanwhile, the organization continues to spend bundles of money lobbying and launching ballot initiative campaigns attacking American agriculture. Their promise to save puppies and kittens is nothing more than a smoke screen to hide the true agenda of eliminating meat, dairy and eggs from the dinner table by regulating farmers and ranchers out of business.

A great blog post at Protect The Harvest explains how the IRS has increased its scrutiny of political organizations -- namely the ones they don’t like -- while it lets HSUS slide. Check it out all the details here.

As Protect The Harvest aptly states, “Only time will tell, but hardworking American taxpayers deserve answers. Government shouldn’t be picking favorites and the IRS should be applying the same rules to everyone.”

What do you think about the IRS targeting certain organizations over others? Why do you suppose an investigation of HSUS has yet to be conducted in full? Do you think Lerner’s affiliation with HSUS has anything to do with it? Weigh in by leaving your thoughts in the comments section below.

There was a brief discussion on Fox and Friends this morning about this subject. Stu Varney had the facts on HSUS and it was good to hear them on a national news program. I wish that the other major news networks would also give some coverage.

The IRS fiasco is a problem beyond politics. This intrusion is just another example of a government gone awry. Another example is the names, addresses, e-mails of producers in agriculture that USDA gave to so called environmental groups and then recognized their mistake and admitted wrong doing and then telling those of us in agriculture that all those names would be returned. Anybody looking to buy a bridge to no where.

Well, it was the EPA that recently released that information. What I like is that they think it is ok to do that, but the NRCS and FSA offices won't share tax forms you sign and they are in the same building many times. HSUS does far more as a lobbying group than as a charity which it proclaims to be. A complete novice can see the connections as to why there has not been any investigation even after all the letters that have been sent to request one.

The other (liberal) news outlets are probably all big donors to HSUS.

We had a neighbor who as a ag producer was always working to protect the environement and get the highest yield out of his cattle production unit. So he did all the right things to get maximum weight gain on his calves and produce the best grass pastures. He became the target of a HSUS attack and pretty soon he had all the state & federal regulatory divisions all over him including the IRS. Ultimately they completely broke him financially to the point that he even attempted filing BK to stay slovent. When it came out that he was finally cleared of all the false accusations brought by HSUS and the government enities to attack him, it was then to late.Around here HSUS are refered to as "Ranch & Farm Killers".

HSUS needs to be put in their place, which is a slow boat to China.

I wish Beef Magazine wouldn't reprint inaccurate information about the nation's largest animal protection organization--pitched by notorious lobbyist Rick Berman no doubt--when we are trying to rehabilitate our image. This is a distraction and has nothing to do with raising our product right. 501(c)(4) organizations are PACS and they should be scrutinized. The real IRS scandel is lobbyists like Berman abusing tax-exempt status and stealing fas estimated $23 million from the US Treasury. As a farmer and a taxpayer, I can tell the different from a bureaucrat and a crook. This article only shows that Berman has friends at this publication and if you want to talk scandel, read about the money he's stolen from every taxpaying American here: http://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2013/05/18/corporations-anonymo...

PigGirl you are wrong! 501 (c) 4 tax exempt and PACS rae completely different! apples and oranges, beef and pork.
" I can tell the different from a bureaucrat and a crook." ?? Really? you are either ignorant to the facts or as is usually the case a HSUS blogger hiding behind a false identity.

HSUS Sniper? Charming. And you're right -- I misspoke. Allow me to correct myself before you shoot and kill me. Under the IRS Code 501(c)(4)s must be operated exclusively to promote social welfare and the commen good. And yes, I really can tell the difference between a bureaucrat and a crook and anyone who watched that oversight hearing yesterday saw the despicable way Lois Lerner was treated would be hard pressed to see it as anything other than an attack on our country's servants -- even if they do work for the IRS. Lerner's committment to service speaks for itself as does Berman's.He lives in a multi-milliondallar mansion, earns God knows how much, and does it all through a duplicitous system of manipulating tax-exempt status for personal gain. The IRS Code shouldn't be a vehicle for anyone to profit, plunder, and abuse and when I read about people like Berman who do in Beef Magazine -- which is supposed to be about cattle operations -- in turns my stomach. Really.

This whole thing is really simple. All we need to do is make a list of all of the supporters of these organisations, HSUS, PETA Green Peace and the like. Divide the world's food production, sort off those "farmers" that they can support and have them eat only from those sources with absolutley no exceptions not even death. Only then will they understand that the production of food and fiber has evolved out of necessity to feed a planet, not greed. And after they have all starved out the other %99.9 of the world to put up with their stupid antics.
