FDA Guidance On Antibiotics Is A Victory 2

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced its intent to publish on April 13 its final Guidance 209 and a draft proposed rule on veterinary feed directives. It calls for voluntary suspension of non-therapeutic use of certain antibiotics in livestock production. The initiative is voluntary and eliminates certain antibiotics used to enhance growth or improve feed efficiency. Neither the industry nor activists are totally pleased, which is probably a sign of victory....More

Survey Shows Most Consumers Don’t Care About COOL

Mandatory country of origin labeling (COOL) of meat and other foods is one of those issues that goes on and on and on. I wrote my first story about proposals to introduce COOL in 1994. The measure was finally implemented in 2009, but the battle over COOL continues three years later....More

How About Just Leaving Livestock Alone? 1

As discussions about the next farm bill begin to get earnest, it’s widely accepted that subsidies will be dramatically reduced, especially direct payments to farmers. Meanwhile, most everyone still believes that there must be a safety net, and that food production remains a national security issue....More
