There continues to be opportunity for stocker operators to buy mismanaged cattle, sort them into larger and similar groups, perhaps upgrading them along the way. But, Derrell Peel, extension livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University, points out increased stocker value of gain places more value potential on cattle performance. In practice, he believes that could alter the procurement strategy of some stocker producers to focus more on performance potential and quality than price. In relative terms, he sees the opportunity for stocker operators to make more money on the value of gain than they have in the past.
