Shorthorn Juniors Exhibit National Champions In Iowa

Shorthorn juniors from 24 states made their way to the 2013 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference themed "Juniors Today - Leaders Tomorrow" in Des Moines, IA during the week of June 24 - 29. A total of 566 head of cattle were exhibited at the Iowa State Fairgrounds competing in eight different shows. Wes Hudson of Ark., and associate judge Todd Herman of OK, evaluated the Owned Purebred Shorthorn Heifer Show. Evaluating the Bred & Owned Females, ShorthornPlus Females, Purebred Cow/Calf Pairs, ShorthornPlus Cow/Calf Pairs, Bred & Owned Bulls, Purebred Steers and ShorthornPlus Steers was Scott Werning of SD.
 
Rising to the top of 339 purebred Shorthorn females to take home the Grand Champion Shorthorn Female honor was SULL CHERRI MARY LOU ET, shown by Nick Sullivan, Dunlap, IA. Also the Division IV Champion, this female was born April 2012 and is a daughter of SULL RIGHT DIRECTION ET and SULL CHERRI 205-6 ET. Clayton Boyert of Seville, OH, showed the Reserve Grand Champion Female, BOY CHERRI BRANDI 207, an April 2012 daughter of FREE K-KIM HOT COMMODITY ET and BOY CHERRI BRANDI 903 ET. Boyert's female was the Reserve Division IV Champion Female.
 
Selected for third overall champion female was SULL BO'S TRAVELING ET, shown by Sara Sullivan, Dunlap, IA. Initially selected as the Division V Champion Female, this March 2012 female is a daughter of SULL TRAVELER 9807 ET and SULL MYRTLE BO 46P-1. Fourth overall champion female distinction went to CF COUNTESS 252 TP X ET, shown by Cole Clanton, Bucyrus, KS. This March 2012 female is a daughter of CF TRUMP X and SULL RED COUNTESS 8007 ET 7/8. Clanton's female was also the Reserve Division V Champion Female. Rounding out the top five selection as fifth overall champion female was V8 CF MONA MADNESS 1124, shown by Cole Whisman, Illinois City, IL. This October 2011 female, also selected as Division VII Champion Female, is a daughter of WHR SONNY DEUCE 3916 ET and SULL MONA LISA SMILE 615.
 
In the group classes following the selection of the champion female, Sara Sullivan led two of her entries to be the Champion Pair of Purebred Females. The state of Iowa claimed the Best State Group of Four Purebred Females.

Hannah Winegardner, Lima, OH, was the first to enter the winner's circle on Friday morning as her heifer MONA LISA ET, was selected as the Grand Champion Bred & Owned Female by Werning after sorting 66 entries. This May 2012 female, selected earlier as the Division II Champion, is out of DF WACO 6W ET and SULL MONA LISA DAZZLER ET. Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Female went to SULL BO'S TRAVELING ET, shown by Sara Sullivan. Selected first as the Division III Champion, this March 2012 female is a daughter of SULL TRAVELER 9807 ET and SULL MYRTLE BO 46P-1.

On Friday afternoon, 66 ShorthornPlus females, 21 of those bred and owned, were evaluated by Werning. Selected as Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Female was MISS IZZY 1207, shown by Brandon Hagie, Clarion, IA. This Division III winner is out of GOET I80 and HIPPY 904, born April 2012. Reserve Champion honors went to SULL JALYNN BEAUTY, shown by Kane Aegerter, Seward, NE. Initially selected as the Division IV Champion, this February 2012 female is out of SULL RIGHT DIRECTION ET and SSUL JALYNN 728ET.
 
Champion Bred & Owned ShorthornPlus Female distinction was awarded to SULL BLUE BABY 2001, shown by Sara Sullivan. This January 2012 female is out of DF VEGAS 310M ET and SULL STOCKMAN 8406. Selected out of six pairs, this 2009 born cow is out of NPS Joe and her February 2013 calf is sired by Lorenz's Big Daddy Jazz. Exhibiting the Reserve Champion Purebred Cow/Calf was Blayze Bierschwale, Copperas Cove, TX, with ROCA Big Red Daisy and her heifer calf TXMLSTN Daisy's Dumpling. The April 2011 cow is out of ROCA Foxxy's Tonic and her March 2013 calf is sired by Phildon Proud Double Shot.
 
MAV Minnie 890U and her bull calf MAV Panache 308A claimed Grand Champion ShorthornPlus Cow/Calf honors over three other pairs. Exhibited by Ashley Vogel, Hartley, IA, this July 2008 cow is out of Hi View's Ace of Diamonds and her calf is sired by MAV Charisma 906W. Following in the reserve slot was WHR Cumberland XN23 and her heifer calf B2C Sunshine 601, shown by Bodie Cotter, Gepp, AK. This November 2010 cow is out of WHR LS Tonic 6N13 ET and her calf is sired by Carpe Diem.
 
In the Bred & Owned Bull Show BRCC Frosty Tonic Y05, shown by Colby Lingo of Oak Grove, LA, rose to the top of 14 entries to be selected as Grand Champion. This March 2012 bull is out of Ar Su Lu Tonic X and WHR GN Cecilia 9N11 ET. Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Bull went to Dreamy 280 Joe Rider 204, shown by Hope Schlimgen, Blue Mounds, WI. This January 2012 bull is out of SS Joe Rider 358 and Dreamy 280 Sables Delight.
 
Autumn Schott, Alden, IA, exhibited the Grand Champion Shorthorn Market Steer and Overall Grand Purebred Steer with DCS Oxy 3132 ET. Selected out of 46 purebred Shorthorn steer entries, this 1,310-lb. steer is sired by WHR Sonny 8114 ET. The Reserve Champion Market Steer and Overall Reserve Grand Purebred Steer honors went to RRCC Pure Vision DV 210, shown by Cole Whisman. Sired by 4D Double Vision 7/8, this entry weighed in at 1,162 lbs.
 
Grand Champion Prospect Steer went to LR Super Man, shown by Harley Sargent, Denison, TX. This 701-lb. steer is sired by Double Deal. Following for Reserve Champion was Jennifer Bedwell with her 796-lb. steer, RFC Starburst 241. This entry is sired by FSF Starburst 058.
 
Lorenz's Big Stuff, shown by Joshua Lorenz, Grant Park, IL, took home the Grand Champion Purebred Bred & Owned Steer award. This 1,122-lb. steer is sired by Lorenz's Big Daddy Jazz. Selected as the Reserve Champion Bred & Owned Steer was AT TGS Luke, shown by Tejlor Strope, O'Neill, NE. Sired by TTT Crown Royal II, this entry weighed in at 982 lbs.
 
After 15 ShorthornPlus steers had been sorted, Grand Champion was awarded to KOLT WW Lucky 15, shown by Andrew Hodges. Sired by Tiger Woods, this steer weighed in at 1,063 lbs. Following for Reserve Champion ShorthornPlus steer was Homer 22Z, shown by Tejlor Strope. This 1,066-lb. steer is sired by Monopoly.
