Thieves like beef
The Food Marketing Institute says meat was the most shoplifted item in U.S. grocery stores in 2005, ahead of analgesics, razor blades and baby formula. Meat has historically been second to health and beauty items because pseudoephedrine, a common ingredient in cough medicines, is a main ingredient in home-cooked meth. Such medicines are now behind the counter, however. Top-end cuts, such as ribeyes and filet mignons, are the most commonly lifted items, with such premium brands as Certified Angus Beef
