Commercial red meat production from January to June 2010 totaled 23.9 billion lbs.
Commercial red meat production for the U.S. totaled 4.18 billion lbs. in June, up slightly from the 4.16 billion lbs. produced in June 2009, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board, USDA.
Totaling 2.32 billion lbs., beef production was 1% above the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 3.05 million head, up 2% from June 2009. The average live weight was down 8 lbs. from the previous year, at 1,261 lbs.
Veal production totaled 10.8 million lbs., 7% below June a year ago. Calf slaughter totaled 68,600 head, down 11% from June 2009. The average live weight was up 18 lbs. from last year, at 269 lbs.
