USDA Reports Feedlot Numbers Declining

With lower cattle numbers and tight pockets of consumers, beef prices aren’t looking up.

In a recent report, USDA expressed concern about the fifth straight month decline in the number of cattle being grain fed in feedlots.

August figures showed 9,997 million cattle being fed in yards, indicating a 26% decline in light cattle from 2007; however, there is a 13% rise in heavy cattle.

These figures show that with the high cost of feed, cattle are being left on grass longer, and with the decline in corn-fed beef, prices of grain-fed beef in supermarkets will be affected. The current price consciousness of U.S. consumers, due to a weak economy, could limit any upward price movement.
