Contractors File 13 Liens Against Northern Beef Packers

Since Jan. 1, contractors have filed 13 liens totaling $1,339,029 against the Northern Beef Packers plant, located in Aberdeen, SD, according to records at the Brown County Register of Deeds Office.

The liens have been filed by three Aberdeen companies, two Sioux Falls companies, a Webster firm, as well as other companies. The liens contain lists of labor, materials and services for which contractors say they provided to the plant but did not receive payment.

Only one lien, filed by Jensen Rock and Sand of Aberdeen for $176,125, has been paid, according to courthouse records.

More than $1.16 million has not been paid. That total does not include the amounts owed to other contractors from previous years. Courthouse records show that amount to be more than $10 million.

David Palmer, CEO and president of Northern Beef Packers, says that he estimates the amount from previous liens to be $6.7 million, although that figure changes as some contractors receive payment or claim more money is owed them.
