Governor Mitch Daniels made a return visit to the Indiana Farm Bureau State Convention last week. The Governor praised the Farm Bureau for its selection of “Connect” as a convention theme. Daniels says farmers need to connect with consumers to help them understand the contribution agriculture makes to our state and our economy.

He says that the increasing number of federal regulations threatens to limit agriculture’s ability to be productive. The proposed regulation by the U.S. Department of Labor that would prevent young people from working on farms is an example.

“This is something only a bureaucrat could think of. You would almost think this is a joke, until you realize they are serious," he says.

Such a prohibition would truly be a disservice to the younger generation.

"If Washington would stop trying to regulate everything farmers do, agriculture has a bright future. The trend lines are positive for agriculture," he says.
