Through genetic selection, better nutrition and improved shelter, dairymen in the USA are able to supply milk and cheese with 64 percent fewer cows now than in the 1940s. In 1944, the dairy cow population was estimated at 25.6 million. In 2009, the dairy cow numbers are 9.2 million.
