Canada fired the nextsalvo in itsongoing dispute with the U.S. over country-of-origin labeling (COOL) by releasing a list of U.S. commoditiesit's considering for possible relaliationunder the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement process. It includes beef, pork and chicken, in addition to a wide range of grains, fruits and dairy products.
In a statement released on Friday, Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, andGerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board,said that the U.S. failure to comply with WTO's May 23 deadline has forced Canada to pursue the options.
“When the U.S. failed to comply by the May 23 deadline, we said we would pursue all options available. Today, we are also releasing a list of U.S. commodities for possible retaliation, to be published as soon as possible in the Canada Gazette, as a way to formally launch the consultation process."

The statement said Canada would not act on the retaliatory measures until authorized by WTO to do so.
