It's our pleasure this month to introduce Bret Kealy as new publisher of BEEF magazine. As publisher, he assumes responsibilities for the business ledgers of BEEF and its sister publications, National Hog Farmer and Hay & Forage Grower.

Kealy is an old hand on the business side of ag publishing, working for the past 20 years on predominantly the crops and feed side of U.S. agriculture. He's a great addition to the staff and we're glad he's joined our business management team.

The downside of his arrival, however, is the departure of Steve May, who served with BEEF for eight years. A hard-driving professional who lived and breathed his magazines, May was the architect of some impressive doings at BEEF.

During his tenure, BEEF launched numerous initiatives designed to better serve our audience of U.S. beef producers. Among them were three electronic newsletters — BEEF Cow-Calf Weekly, BEEF Stocker Trends and BEEF Quality Strategies; and three new Web sites —, and Two other projects — American Cowman (page 53) and the BEEF Quality Summit (detailed on page 4) will debut yet this year.

May's boundless energy and enthusiasm for the business were infectious to staff. He will be missed as both a professional and a friend, and we wish him the best in his new endeavors.
