To no one's surprise, country-of-origin labeling (COOL) was a hot issue during July's Beef Industry Summer Conference in Dallas, TX. After four days of debate, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) membership in attendance instructed its leadership to:
Immediately petition USDA to implement a “born, raised and processed” labeling program under its Processed Verified Program to promote U.S. beef at retail, foodservice and export markets.
Work toward amending the current COOL law to make it voluntary.
Seek an extension of COOL's voluntary provisions if the law isn't amended consistent with NCBA policy.
To work with USDA and all producer segments to develop a strategy on how producers can comply with the current provisions of the law once it becomes mandatory on Sept. 30, 2004.
The roll call vote on these measures was 83% in favor. On a state affiliate basis, the measures passed 28 to 8. State affiliates voting against the measures included the Arizona Cattle Growers, Colorado Cattlemen's, Iowa Cattlemen's, Montana Stockgrowers, North Dakota Stockmen's, Oregon Cattlemen's, South Dakota Cattlemen's, and Wyoming Stockgrowers.

Missouri Beef Tour Oct. 18
The tour that will include stops at three Cape Girardeau County beef operations, begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Glen Birk farm near Jackson. Other stops include the Butch Meier operation and the Southeast Missouri State University farm.
Other stop possibilities include Show-Me Select heifers to be sold in program's fall-calving sale in May 2004, a steer-feeding operation that produces 87% Choice grade cattle or better and a synchronized breeding program. The festivities include an evening beef dinner at the end of the tour.
