I found myself watching the truck and trailer pull out of the yard last week, loaded up with four heifers, three kids, one mom and enough feed and clothing to get through an entire week. They left at midnight to drive the nine hours to the show while avoiding the day’s heat.
Sure, I felt a little guilty knowing they would be doing all the setup without me, but I was feeling more jealous than anything – because I knew they were in pursuit of one of those memories they will never forget.
The older my kids get, the more avid my support of youth programs becomes. The kids have learned more about the industry in the last year than they had prior to that. And that’s simply because of livestock judging and getting more involved in showing their heifers and all the educational contests that are part of the experience.
Millions of dollars are spent across the U.S. all summer long hauling kids to such activities. It is money well spent.
