National Ag Week offers farmers and ranchers the opportunity to highlight their family-run businesses and educate consumers about where their food comes from.
It’s National Ag Week; let’s celebrate! Producers are hosting promotional activities across the country this week, and the official National Agriculture Day is this Thursday, March 8. National Ag Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by U.S agriculture. Here’s a sprinkling of some of the commemorations going on across the country.
As featured in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson says Minnesota's farmers and ranchers work hard each day to grow wholesome and healthy food and to produce renewable fuel, with an emphasis on environmental stewardship and a concern for generations to come. Minnesota Agriculture Week is being recognized in conjunction with National Ag Week. 2012 marks the 39th anniversary of the national observance.”
According to Agri-Pulse, “Agriculturists from all across the country will be on the Hill this week to celebrate National Ag Day. There are a series of events scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday, in between hearings and meetings for the Senate and House Agriculture Committees.”

Published in The Republic, “National Agriculture Week is a good time to celebrate the work and achievements of North Dakota’s 30,000 farmers and ranchers. An agriculture exhibit, developed by the state Agriculture Department and commodity groups, will be on display through Friday in the Capitol's Memorial Hall in Bismarck, ND.”
According to KSFY News in Sioux Falls, SD, “Students from across the state will not only eat pizza this week - they'll also learn how farmers helped produce it. As part of National Ag Week, a local dairy farmer and pork producer will meet with elementary students at several schools across the state to discuss the state's agricultural industry. They'll also provide a pizza party and discuss with students how the ingredients in the pizza are produced by farms and made into pizzas.”
Several students from South Dakota State University (SDSU) will be traveling to Washington, D.C., this week to attend National Ag Week events on the Hill. In addition, SDSU is hosting an ag panel next week on campus. Come for a free meal and listen to an interactive, thought-provoking discussion about the food and agriculture industry of South Dakota. The panel will be moderated by Barry Dunn, dean of SDSU’s College of Ag and Bio Sciences, and includes a dietitian, an organic farmer, conventional farmer, a veterinarian, a politician and an agronomist. It will be held March 13 at 6 p.m. on campus in the Volstorff Ballroom.
