How Do You View The OCM/HSUS Alliance?

The industry was abuzz this week with the news that the Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM) was partnering with the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) in a lawsuit against the checkoff. This week’s online poll question is: What do you think of OCM partnering with HSUS?”

Mike makes me ashamed to be a. Kansan, an ex bronc rider, a retired cattleman,
and a dog owner.

OCM is carrying water for HSUS.
OCM and R-calf exploit the annual audit.
OCM has HUS lawyers review it.
OCM follows HSUS advice to have an HSUS friendly Kansas City law firm file the case probono (IE: you and I the tax payers are paying for this via charitable contribution deductions)
HSUS keeps their hands clean.
Obnoxious can get you the same reputation as stupid. Too bad Mike Callicrate does not feed sheep...or he might even have learned that.

I think it's a great idea. For too long the beef industry has been misusing its funds.

YOU OBVIOUSLY LIVE UNDER A ROCK. THERE IS NO PROOF OR REASON TO BELIEVE ANY BEEF CHECK OFF FUNDS HAVE BEEN MISUSED.

Give me a break. Obviously you don't follow the progress of the check off and have been drinking the cool aid of the PETA press!

This partnership could be devastating to the Beef Industry. If so, everyone in the industry will be affected. Two organizations with different goals partnering doesn't seem right. There must be some factors that neither organization is disclosing.

It's too bad OCM/Callicrate accepted help from the enemy. My initial thought was that integrity is not for sale - at any price. Yet, it's okay for NCBA to align themselves with our enemies REPEATEDLY? And there's no equal outrage over that?

OCM is on the right side of this issue. Where has NCBA stood on issues that have hurt us or helped us? NCBA is just as much an enemy to the family rancher as the Humane Society is, maybe more. Sure, NCBA throws in some issues in their policies that we can all easily agree upon, but don't be deceived. Look how detrimental they are to us - instead benefiting the packers, big agri-business, etc. (They remind me of wolves in sheep's clothing- but thanks to the HS we can't shoot them!) NCBA will put us out of business before the Humane Society ever will. Especially if they keep controlling the checkoff & get their way and raise it $2/head- and continue to use OUR money against us!!!

OCM may be smarter than all of us. Why not accept money from the enemy? Weaken them a bit. (Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.)What could OCM possibly give them in return? It's not like they're "selling out" anything. They both see eye to eye on ONE issue. They both believe animal production is better off in the hands of the FAMILY rancher. The OCM is fighting the fight all of us should be on board helping with. Once again, Callicrate is "taking one for the team" and no matter what your personal opinion of the man is - one has to give credit to someone who has the guts to get out and fight for what he believes in. Granted, not all of us have the time, resources or opportunity so I'm glad there are those out there not afraid to put themselves on the line -as the rest of us wait and watch from the sidelines - and judge.

You are so wrong that it is pathetic .

I can not decide which is my bigger foe, the packers, big feedlots, and the NCBA or HSUS but I am sure that they are both trying to put me out of business as a small family owned ranch. At least HSUS is not spending my check-off dollars without asking my opinion. By the way, for all of you NCBA guys, I have been at your meetings and I have spoke up only to be ridiculed if it did not go along with your ideas and policies. Used to be a member. Never again.

Think I'll have a steak tonight. Don't care if the farmer who raised the animal was from OCM, HSUS or NCBA. There is room in U.S. food production for all of the above!

Mike has a very good understanding of our industry and a ton of courage to go with it!

You are about as right as a rat kissing a cat. Which in this case isn't far from reality. Mike is on record as saying, "all beef is bad except my beef." Where does that place you and I in beef production. Does that sound as if he wants you, I, or any other producer for that matter to prosper? Mike has a huge Axe to grind and doesn't seem to care if any one else goes down with him as long as he feels like he has "bearded the lion". He has made other statements regarding fed beef practices while at the same time overlooking his own feedlot.
He has also made some rather eyebrow raising statements about beef demand saying words to the effect, we need to push beef through the system, demand was not pull it through.
That flies in the face of every economic 101 student's first week of how supply and demand works.

If it will help improve beef production's image with consumers, seems like a good idea.

I have no problem with checkoff funds being used to promote beef products, but I am against these funds when they are used to benefit corporate ag to the detriment of family farmers and ranchers. That is the point here. HSUS is a long time nemisis of corporate ag. Any help we can get is appreciated.

It's good because it shows their true colors and of their asscoiated organizations.

What is OCM?

Anonymous
on Aug 28, 2012

OCM is a mutual admiration society of paranoid deluded narcisists. It has about 40 members who dislocate their sholders pating each other on the back. Generaly they distrust democracys, majorities, free makets and anyone smarter than themselves (which is just about everyone)

Someone has to stand up to Checkoff. Kudos to OCM and HSUS!!

Only a fool would put their paw in that.

The fox(HSUS)is cackling all the way to the hen house(beef industry)!

Anonymous
on Aug 24, 2012

watch out - HSUS is working towards throwing animal ag in the trash can.

Anonymous
on Aug 24, 2012

Sure hope they are successful in throwing the Smithfield-Tyson-JBS-Cargill model of food production in the trash can. That modelbenefits no one but the large agribusinesses and harms, small farmers, animals and the environment. If the corporate PR farm bureaus and Beef magazine are against it, then I'm for the OCM/HSUS lawsuit.

Anonymous

You really are terribly ill-informed. I am a small farmer and the present packer model works just fine for me. I just sold my Fall 2011 calves and am very pleased with what they brought. Under the totally non-defined model that you think you'd like to have, you or no one else has a clue what cattle would sell for.

I do not understand OCM. It seems like they are willing to bring the entire industry down just to make a point. I know Calicrate and he has a total lack of understanding of the realities of our industry

Anonymous
on Aug 24, 2012

The OCM folks must be "nuts". How can anyone who calls himself a beef producer partner with HSUS? These folks need some mental counseling. No cattleman in his right mind would partner with HSUS.

Anonymous
on Aug 24, 2012

Any partnering with a group that has a history of using media hype, lies and misleading story lines is an insult to our cattle industsry. If there is an issue it should be put to the industry. The Beef Checkoff does work for us and both OCM and HSUS should be treated as having conflicting interests to the beef industry.

Sociopathic, assinine, and self serving to the egos involved.
