The beef industry experienced a big win Feb. 6 when the Senate voted against adding the Wellstone amendment to the Senate Farm Bill.

Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN) proposed an amendment to the Senate Farm Bill that would have limited cattle operations of 1,000 head of cattle or more access to the benefits of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The Wellstone amendment would have denied a significant number of family livestock operations access to EQIP.

"This is a big win for the cattle industry," says Chandler Keys, NCBA's vice president of public policy. "Special thanks to our state affiliates for their perserverance at defeating this measure."
