NEW HOLLAND, PA. (January 22, 2010) – New Holland Agriculture has confirmed its reputation as the leader in agricultural design with two prestigious 2009 GOOD DESIGN™ awards. The Boomer 8N™ compact tractor and the SideWinder™ II armrest were both recognized by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies. These awards acknowledge New Holland’s tailored and intuitive solutions to make state-of-the-art technology available to improve agricultural efficiency.
The award, now in its 59th year, is considered as the oldest and most widely recognized program for design excellence worldwide. Designs from 48 countries were submitted for this year’s program in categories ranging from electronics to furniture and medicine.
New Holland won the awards in the transport category, the only agricultural manufacturer to receive these prestigious awards. Other recipients included renowned brands such as Apple and Bosch.
GOOD DESIGN sense is the only way”, stated Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum. He continued,“[...] GOOD DESIGN is a truly global program of phenomenal proportion. The 2009 GOOD DESIGN program is the strongest program ever, with the largest-ever amount of corporate participation and the best and most substantial designs awarded. This might be the beginning that signals the start that corporations and designers are changing their direction toward more sustainable and cost-effective design and less use of flash and extravagance [..].” This is a philosophy that New Holland has taken to heart in the development of its latest innovative and efficient products.
Boomer 8N: cutting-edge technology in a retro package
The perfect combination of retro styling and modern technology saw the Boomer 8N clinch one of the coveted GOOD DESIGN awards. This is just the latest accolade for the tractor, following its success in the AE50 awards bestowed by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) for 2009’s most innovative products. The timeless design of the classic 8N provided the inspiration for this modern masterpiece that is manufactured in Dublin, Georgia. The Boomer 8N is perfect for ground care applications or small scale farmers, and offers the ultimate ease of operation thanks to its multi-award winning EasyDrive™ Continuously Variable Transmission.
Its striking design features a rich and intense red chassis with the classic grey hood and fenders to give it the look and feel of the original 8N. The design features included a digital display with chrome accents, something yet to be seen on other tractors, and fully integrated headlights that give the tractor a stronger and sturdier stance.
Owners can also personalize their tractor, as an extensive range of customizable options is available. The choice is truly vast, ranging from a chrome exhaust, to different decals and it even extends to an optional canopy. In short, the Boomer 8N is equally at home mowing the lawn or hard at work on the farm.
SideWinder™ II armrest offers intuitive control
New Holland’s SideWinder™ II armrest, available on the multi award-winning T6000 Series and T7000 Series tractor ranges, was once again recognized as an industry benchmark for innovative design, having already received the prestigious ‘Golden Tractor for the Design 2010’™ award at Agritechnica 2009, Europe’s most important agricultural trade fair held in Germany. The SideWinder II armrest will be also be available on the new, redesigned T8000 Series and T9000 Series tractors, scheuled to be released later this year.
The T7070 Auto Command™ was also judged ‘Tractor of the Year’ by a European jury of over 20 pre-eminent agricultural journalists. New Holland, together with the Fiat Style Centre, designed this intuitive and ergonomic armrest based on input from New Holland’s own customers. Inspired by the award-winning controls on the FR9000 Series self-propelled forage harvester and on the CR9090 combine, all major functions are immediately accessible on the CommandGrip™ control lever such as the control direction selection, the speed programming and adjustment, the IntelliSteer™ auto-guidance, among a host of other features.
Operators also benefit from the IntelliView™ III touchscreen display. This is the first monitor on the market that integrates tractor and implement controls, putting all of the information at the operator’s fingertips to improve productivity and reduce operator fatigue. The SideWinder II was also the recipient of one of the sought after AE50 Awards as well as one of the Spanish FIMA show awards.
