World meat production grew 2% in 2004 over 2003, reports Worldwatch Institute (WI). In its “Vital Signs 2005” report, WI says 2004 meat production was 258 million tons, more than doubling since the 1970s, reports iowaagconnection.com.

The Food and Ag Organization (FAO) estimates world meat production in 2005 will increase to 265 million tons. FAO says the average person consumed 89¼ lbs. of meat in 2004, estimated to increase to almost 92 lbs. in 2005.
