The Senate Ag Committee will complete its farm bill field hearings this month. Hearings are set for Aug. 15 in Redmond, OR; Aug. 16 in Grand Island, NE; and Aug. 17 in Great Falls, MT.
Now that the World Trade Organizations' Doha negotiations have been suspended, the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) is advocating extension of the current farm bill for one year. AFBF President Bob Stallman said, "By extending the current farm program, with minor changes to take into account recent trade rulings, we will move forward with the kind of policy that helps ensure U.S. farmers have the support they need to survive in today's contentious global trading environment."
Meanwhile, the National Farmers Union says it will hold a series of listening sessions on the 2007 Farm Bill. The sessions are designed to allow rural Americans to voice their opinions on ag policy. Sessions will be held: Aug. 5 in Point, TX; Aug. 14 in Springfield, IL and the Turner County Fair, SD; Aug. 19 in Chippewa Falls, WI, and Aberdeen, SD; Aug. 22 in Tremonton, UT; Aug. 24 in Fresno, CA; Aug. 25 in Michigan; Aug. 27 in Columbia, MO; Aug. 30 in Lincoln, NE; and Sept. 2 in Huron, SD.
