Mosquito control
Eliminating standing water reduces mosquito-breeding areas. If standing water can't be eliminated, treat it with Mosquito Torpedo larvicide. Assessing BRD risk
Animal Profiling International (API) created the Animal Performance Index to assist producers in assessing risk for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in their herds. The analytical index identifies at-risk cattle, targets treatment costs more accurately and improves performance. The index uses biomarkers and special parameters from a blood draw. Once the sample is received by API, turnaround is within 24 hours.

Software breeding program
eCattleMatings is a Web-based tool to help seedstock producers with breeding decisions. It's currently programmed for the Angus breed, with more breeds to be added in the future. The program focuses on the desired genetic outcome of the calf and the known EPDs and $Values of the cow, then ranks the best bull to result in that mating. The goal is to reduce unpredictability in offspring by setting minimum, maximum or optimum limits on desired traits, while allowing the user to place an emphasis on particular traits.

ABS process verification
ABS Global has applied for USDA approval of its process verification program (PVP) for genetic-, source- and age-verification of its beef supply chain services program. ABS is the first genetics company to apply for USDA PVP approval.

Verification approval
Beef Concepts, Inc., Springfield, MN, received the USDA Process Verified Program stamp of approval for source and age verification. Through their Bovitrak cattle management software, Beef Concepts can source and age verify cattle from birth to harvest. Bovitrak is a complete herd management software program, allowing cow-calf producers, backgrounders and feedlots to collect production and performance information. It can also be used in conjunction with a radio-frequency ID program to view and collect data at chuteside.

Splitting logs
Shaver Manufacturing Co. introduces its SL-Series log-splitter line, featuring two models that utilize tractors and skid steer loaders to split logs. The SL-2036-T is a tractor-mounted unit with a 5- × 35-in. cylinder powered by a three-point Category I or II tractor. It features a standard four-way splitter blade and two splitting positions — ground level or horizontal. The SL-2036-S fits on a skid steer loader and contains several of the same features.

Irrigation control panels
Reinke Manufacturing introduces its new series of Reinke Precision Management (RPM) Control Panels for its irrigation systems. The controls can be tailored for each customer's requirements. The RPM panels offer three levels of precision control, including RPM Preferred, providing precision digital control; RPM Advanced, which offers the ability to customize settings for up to 10 different sections of a field; and RPM Panel, the base-level control panel. The tiered levels are designed to help meet producers' varying levels of irrigation needs.
