Brazil looks north
Brasil Foods, formed by the merger of Perdigao and Sadia, is exploring expansion in the U.S. following JBS S.A.'s bid to acquire Pilgrim's Pride Corp. Brasil Foods President Jose Antonio Prado Fay says the company wants to become a familiar brand in the U.S., in addition to its main markets in Russia and the Middle East. “We can enter this market either through partnerships or acquisitions,” Fay told Valor Economico.
A Pilgrim's Pride acquisition would make JBS a competitor to Brasil Foods in the poultry market. JBS became the world's largest meat processor with its merger with Bertin (Brazil's third-largest beef processor) and its acquisition of Pilgrim's Pride (second-largest U.S. chicken processor).
