Gasoline from cow manure
Japanese scientists claim to have a new source of gasoline — cattle manure. The Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology scientists claim to have extracted 0.042 oz. of gasoline from every 3.5 oz. of cattle manure by applying high pressure and heat, The Associated Press reports. Japan relies almost entirely on imports for oil and gasoline.
The team produced gasoline by adding several metal catalysts to the manure inside a container and applying pressure equivalent to 30 atmospheres and heat of up to 572° F.
The article says the team hopes to improve the technology for commercial use within five years.
