Japanese scientists claim to have a new source of gasoline -- cattle manure. Tokyo University of Ag and Technology scientists claim to have extracted 0.042 oz. of gasoline from every 3.5 oz. of cattle manure by applying high pressure and heat, AP reports. It is big news for Japan, which relies almost entirely on imports for oil and gasoline.

With help from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology near Tokyo, the team produced gasoline by adding several metal catalysts to the manure inside a container and applying pressure equivalent to 30 atmospheres and heat of up to 572° F. The article says the team hopes to improve the technology for commercial use within five years. -- Joe Roybal
