Some Thoughts On GIPSA Day In Fort Collins
The big GIPSA circus is underway today (Friday) in Fort Collins, CO, but two small events occurred this week that confirmed for me the intentions and effects of these proposed new rules....
Conventional Production Best For The Environment
The total carbon footprint (environmental impact) from producing 1 lb. of beef in 2007 was 14% less than in 1977, Washington State University (WSU) research concludes....
A Tale of Two World Views
It really comes down to a simple philosophical difference—either you believe the market works or you don’t. ...
Speaker Snippets From The Fort Collins Rallies
The two competing sides in the debate over the proposed GIPSA rules held rallies in Fort Collins on Thursday night, the eve of the USDA/Department of Justice workshop on livestock competition set for the Colorado State University campus on Friday....
Why All The Industry Discontent?
Cattle producers should be pretty happy right now. Prices for calves, yearlings and fed cattle were all 13% higher the last week of July than a year ago, with live cattle prices up 11% for the first seven months, vs. the same period last year....
“The Big Showdown,” Of Sorts
Next Friday, Aug. 27, in Fort Collins, CO, doesn’t have the same flair as “high noon at the OK corral,” but the principle is the same. Initially, this event seemed likely to be stacked toward a validation of USDA’s proposed GIPSA rule on livestock marketing....
Cattlemen Can Help Prevent Dark Cutters
In most situations, things go better when everyone remains calm. That’s true for cattle, too, including those about to enter the food chain....
Distillers Grain Can Boost Nutrients In Bad Hay
Byproduct feeds from ethanol plants offer ranchers a way to supplement bad hay.
“Distillers grains can pick up the slack when the hay quality falls short,” Chris Zumbrunnen, University of Missouri (MU) Extension livestock specialist in Milan, told field day attendees recently....
Producers Hear Grass-Fed Beef Ins And Outs
Grass-fed beef may never dominate the U.S. beef market, but its practitioners are optimistic about their growth prospects given recent market progress. The addition of grass-fed beef to the menu of some Arby’s restaurants in the Richmond, VA, area is one such sign....
The Bottom Line In BQA
While the lessons learned through participation in beef quality assurance (BQA) programming help the cattle industry spread a good message to consumers about issues such as cattle care and antibiotic use, they can also help a rancher’s bottom line....
Maybe It’s Time To Focus On Children At The Industry Level As Well
Ever since the industry took the first step toward a more value-based marketing system and away from commodity marketing, there has been discomfort among a subset of producers. This is not surprising—whenever the rules of the game change, you have new winners and new losers, and those who had the old rules figured out are naturally going to be against change....
Criteria For Operating A Livestock Farm As A Business
In hobby loss audits, the IRS sometimes views various types of ranching activities as a means of generating tax losses, rather than a profit-oriented venture. That was the issue in the Tax Court case, Ralph Wesinger, Jr., v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue.
USPB Denies R-CALF’s Claim
U.S. Premium Beef (USPB) this week sent a letter to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack requesting that USDA ignore information from R-CALF USA saying the company would not be affected by the proposed GIPSA competition rule....
“Embarrassing” Describes CBB-NCBA Feud
I’ve literally received hundreds of emails from producers looking for insight into the rift between the executive committee of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA)....
So What Now With The NCBA-CBB Feud?
It didn’t matter whether you were talking to members of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), the Federation of State Beef Councils (FSB), or Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB), the general sentiment at last week’s summer meeting in Denver was frustration that the situation had disintegrated to the level it has, and that it should never have happened....
Checkoff Power Squabble Continues
Citing the efficiency of resources and nimbleness that allowed the industry to effectively manage the public fallout from the BSE outbreak in 2003, the Federation of State Beef Councils (FSB) passed a resolution on July 31 to continue its current operating structure with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). However, Federation Division Chair Scott George said in a release that while greater independence is needed, separation is not....

At some point in your career a reporter may tap you for an interview. The August issue of Principal Investigator Advisor offers these tips to its readership of principal investigators in all fields of science, but they are applicable to laypeople, as well....
Industry Politics Boil Over In Denver
For those looking forward to a relatively calm National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) summer meeting, this week’s release by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) of the audit, or compliance review, of NCBA’s checkoff expenditures made that notion a wistful thought....
Opinion: Industry Forms Into A Circular Firing Squad
I think the circular firing squad analogy fits our industry to a T right now. I’m one of those people who actually enjoy watching the game of politics. In a kind of morbid way, it’s interesting to watch how the two sides of an issue can distort and spin an event to fit their own agenda....
Seedstock Producers Offer Alliance Opportunities
If a new bull is the only thing you have to show from your dealings with seedstock suppliers, then you’re probably leaving lots of potential on the table....
