Joe Roybal - Editor

Joe is a native of South Dakota and a graduate of South Dakota State University with a degree in journalism. He worked as a daily newspaper reporter and photographer before doing a six-year stint as a news bureau feature writer. His livestock magazine experience includes serving as managing editor of Dairy Herd Management and editor of Feedlot Management magazines before joining BEEF in 1985. Joe assumed the editorship of BEEF in 1993 when founding editor Paul D. Andre retired.

Burt Rutherford - Senior Editor
Burt has nearly 30 years’ experience communicating about beef industry issues. A Colorado native and graduate of Colorado State University with a degree in agricultural journalism, he now works from his home base in Amarillo, TX, in the heart of cattle feeding country. He worked as communications director for the North American Limousin Foundation and editor of the Western Livestock Journal before spending 21 years as communications director for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. In addition to helping keep BEEF readers informed of trends and production practices to bolster the bottom line, he keeps cattle feeders informed through BEEF Feeder, a 6X/year supplement to BEEF magazine.

Alaina Burt - Managing Editor
Alaina hails from northern Minnesota where she grew up on a small cow/calf operation, of which she is still closely involved with. Her education includes a BS degree in ag business from the University of Minnesota, Crookston and a master’s in communications from South Dakota State University. Alaina has worked within the industry at the Red Angus Association of America, Angus Journal, Bieber Red Angus, and most recently, managing the Oates Land & Cattle dispersal. Starting with BEEF in 2006, she not only brings her production-orientated background to the job, but an enthusiasm and passion for the cattle industry.

Wes Ishmael - Contributing Editor
Wes Ishmael concentrates on industry price and market perspectives for BEEF magazine. Along with his monthly Cattle Economics column, he also writes the BEEF Stocker Trends electronic newsletter, coordinates the National Stocker Award competition, and contributes to the Beef Stocker USA web site produced by BEEF and Kansas State University. A BEEF contributing editor since 1999, he’s been involved with livestock publications since 1983. Ishmael grew up in Colorado and has always been in and around the livestock business; he now lives at Benbrook, TX.
