Meat Market Update | Total Boxed Beef Volume Drops Beyond Normal Holiday Declines

Ed Czerwien, USDA Market News reporter in Amarillo, TX, provides us with the latest outlook on boxed beef prices and the weekly cattle trade.

The daily spot Choice beef cutout ended the week at $202.88, which was $3.96 higher than the previous Friday, but there was very low volume, even for a holiday week, at 606 loads sold. Likewise, the total reported boxed beef volume was 5,706 loads, down 1,095 loads over the previous week and even lower than last Thanksgiving.

Additionally, the latest national steer carcass weight continues to creep up, ending one pound higher. This is in part to excellent feedlot performance and aggressive selling that took place in October.
