Economist Harlan Hughes, BEEF magazine's "Market Advisor" columnist, will headline two Wyoming workshops focusing on drought emergencies in a beef cow enterprise. Set for 6-9 p.m. July 19 in Wheatland at the First State Bank Community Room, and July 20 in Torrington at the Goshen Country Fairgrounds Brand Room, the meetings are open to the public and both are free.

The agenda includes Hughes discussing the economics of two drought strategies -- selling off cattle vs. buying feed, while Wayne Tatman, Extension educator in Torrington, will discuss early weaning strategies. In addition, Dallas Mount, Extension educator from Wheatland, will provide instruction on range grass management during a drought; and University of Wyoming ag law specialist Alan Schroeder will discuss the tax implications of livestock sales due to drought. For more info, contact Mount at 307-322-3667.

By the way, Hughes offers a CD video on "The Economics Of Drought Management Strategies." It's designed to help ranchers make the tough drought-management decisions yet this summer, and is available for $25 from Harlan Hughes, 30 Ramble A Road, Laramie, WY. 82070.
