Give Beef, Win Beef!

As Christmas quickly approaches, I'm spending more time thinking about how truly fortunate so many of us are in life. In my children's book, "Levi's Lost Calf," the main character, Levi, says a prayer at the end of the story. Levi kneels at his bedside and talks to God, "Thank you for the food on my plate, my nice, warm bed, and my loving family. Life is good, and I am blessed. Amen."

Unlike Levi and so many of us, I realize that too many people here in the U.S. and around the world go to sleep at night hungry, cold and alone. I hope to help alleviate some of those pains and spread Christmas joy this holiday season.

I was inspired by rancher Debbie Lyons Blythe, who has a great idea to help those in need this winter. On Facebook, she calls to action her fellow ranchers to donate to local food pantries, churches and soup kitchens and give the gift of beef this holiday season.

"Farmers and ranchers donate every day to local charities across the nation. Let's draw attention to this and show how we can help our neighbors have safe, healthy, nutritious beef to feed their families this winter! So pass the word-- tweet it, blog it, facebook it," she says.

On Twitter, she hopes people will use the hashtag #GiveBeef to help spread the word, and I hope you will join me in the fight against hunger while promoting protein-dense, hunger-curing beef! Learn more about the campaign here.

To kick things off, I'm going to give away a few fun items this Thursday to coincide with the #GiveBeef campaign! To enter, simply answer my questions on this blog today and tomorrow, and I will announce our lucky participants Thursday!
