Caption this calving-season photo to win a copy of “Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West.”

Last week marked the official start of spring -- at least on the calendar anyway. In my neck of the woods, the weather certainly is anything but spring-like. This week's forecast is for continued cold with some snow. Yet, there are small signs of spring everywhere I look -- a robin chirping in the tree, some snowmelt filling up stock dams, and calves frolicking in the pasture.

I'm confident that sunshine and warm temps are just around the corner, and I hope and pray that we receive the much-needed moisture to produce the green pastures we need for summer grazing.

Spring also means calving season for many ranchers, and this photo taken near Kimball, SD, by Editor Joe Roybal looks like a familiar scene one might find on many ranches this time of year, including mine.

What this photo needs is a caption.

As we round out the month of March, I'm looking for the best descriptions of this photo.

To enter, simply post your best caption in the comments section below. I will accept entries until noon on Saturday, March 30, and our winners will be announced on April 1.

The top three captions will be awarded a copy of "Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West," by James P. Owen, with photos by David R. The book is valued at $25 and makes a beautiful coffee table book and conversation starter at social gatherings. The photos are captivating and really share the agriculture story in a unique way. Good luck to everyone! Have a great start to your week!
