History will show that feeder cattle last week sold steady to $2 lower – giving back gains made in the prior week’s market – but accuracy will demand that history also explain the reason had everything to do with far-ranging blizzard conditions that preceded the market.

For instance, as much as 2 ft. of snow and 10-ft. drifts were reported in the Texas Panhandle.

"Death loss estimates were sizeable (with the Texas Cattle Feeders Association reporting 3,500 head), but expense from excess stress proved to be more devastating to both the cattle and people involved," say analysts with the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). "Many cattle walked over their fences and scattered for miles with entire feedlots full of cattle from different owners mixing. However, the snowstorm’s effect on stock cattle may have been worse, with most area cow-calf operations in the full swing of calving season and scores of new stocker arrivals recently turned out on unfamiliar pastures."

Consequently, AMS reports reduced receipts at South Central auction markets last week. Meanwhile, fed-cattle sales at the end of last week sowed some seeds of optimism, with Southern Plains cash sales gaining $2.

The summary below reflects the week ended April 3 for Medium and Large 1 – 500- to 550-lb., 600- to 650-lb. (calves), and 700- to 750-lb. feeder heifers and steers (unless otherwise noted). The list is arranged in descending order by auction volume and represents sales reported in the weekly USDA National Feeder and Stocker Cattle Summary:
