Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) introduced H.R. 4775, calling for an extension of the farm bill until the Doha round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations are complete. The National Farmers Union (NFU) at their annual convention voted to support extending the farm bill for one year.

In addition, Thornberry is asking his colleagues to join in an effort to provide help to those suffering from the wildfires that continue to plague the Texas Panhandle. Thornberry says he's receiving increasing support from both parties in the House for a proposal to attach wildfire recovery assistance to a spending bill currently making its way through Congress. He's asking for similar help in the Senate.

Among the provisions Thornberry proposes are: Compensation for livestock owners for their losses through the Livestock Indemnity Program, and

Funding and technical assistance through the Emergency Conservation Program to rehabilitate farm and ranch land by removing debris, restoring fences and conservation structures, and providing water for livestock. "We have been hit with widespread tragedy created by the largest wildfires in Texas history. It is hard for many people to grasp the magnitude of this disaster. If Katrina was the hurricane of the century, we are experiencing the fires of the century," Thornberry says. -- P. Scott Shearer and Joe Roybal
